Digging Safety

Call 811 before you dig

Oncor encourages consumers to use the "Call Before You Dig" hotline whenever digging more than 16 inches deep to plant or do construction or yard work. The number is easier now than ever before for consumers to remember — just call 8-1-1 before digging.

811 is a national number designated by the Federal Communications Commission for homeowners and professional excavators to call before digging. 811 calls will be directed through a local call center to any affected utilities, like Oncor, which will then mark underground lines for free.

State law requires having underground lines located before digging 16 inches or deeper. It is necessary to contact 811 at least 48 hours in advance of digging to request that service wires be located. Digging without calling can lead to severe consequences including harm to those who dig, costly damages to underground infrastructure and utility service disruptions.

Always err on the side of caution — call 811 BEFORE digging. Make sure your co-workers, gardeners, construction employees, etc. know about the new number, too. For more information about 811, visit www.call811.com.
