Why Electric Vehicles?

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

Emissions for electric vehicles are significantly less than those produced by traditional vehicles even after factoring in power generation emissions.

ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

Electricity is provided locally with domestic energy sources reducing dependence on foreign oil.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS

Electricity is produced with a diverse mix of renewable and fossil fuels which helps reduce price volatility.

The cost to operate an electric vehicle is around 3 cents per mile compared to 14 cents* per mile for a traditional vehicle.

PERSONAL BENEFITS

You can fuel up in your garage by plugging in to a standard 120v power outlet.

EVs are responsive and fun to drive.

Transforming Texas' Transportation Future

Why Texas?

ABUNDANT WIND POWER

Texas has more than 10,000 megawatts of wind generation capacity that will eventually deliver enough clean power to fuel more than 5 million Texas vehicles. By bringing more wind power to the electric grid, Oncor's Competitive Renewable Energy Zone (CREZ) projects will facilitate cleaner eletric vehicle charging.

ROBUST POWER INFRASTRUCTURE

Oncor is leading Texas' construction of 2,300 miles of new transmission lines to bring even more wind power to the state's population centers.

The Texas power grid is designed to handle the extreme demand to keep the AC going on 100+ degree summer days, so it can handle the added load of electric vehicle - no sweat!

ADVANCED METERING

Oncor will install more than 3.2 million advanced meters by 2013, giving customers more information and control over their power consumption. These meters will also allow Retail Electric Providers to offer EV-friendly Time Of Use (TOU) rate plans for lower cost overnight charging.

WHAT'S MY PART?

TO MAXIMIZE THE BENEFITS OF DRIVING ELECTRIC PLEASE TRY THE FOLLOWING:

  • Charge your vehicle overnight when wind generation is most abundant to minimize pollution emissions.
  • Generally, avoid charging your EV between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. to help maximize the efficiency and reliability of the power system.

Charging Time Table

NOW WHAT?

Contact your Retail Electric Provider and ask them about their EV-friendly rateplan offerings.

Please contact Oncor at 888.313.6862 or askoncor.com to let us know that you have made a wise transportation choice by going electric. Once notified, Oncor will check the power lines and equipment serving your house and make any necessary adjustments to help ensure continued safe and reliable electric service to your home. There is no charge for the system assessment.

Whenever possible, charge your EV after 8 p.m. to take advantage of abundant wind power, lower power system loading and potentially lower power prices.

Enjoy your new ride!
